This summer, a number of Historically Black
Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are offering pre-college programs that prepare
and motivate high school rising and graduating seniors to choose and enter
college programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
TUSKEGEE
UNIVERSITY
Tuskegee University's College of Engineering, Architecture and Physical
Sciences is offering high school rising and graduating seniors summer programs
with activities designed to motivate and prepare students for study and careers
in engineering. Students will also have access to campus resources including
computers, libraries, athletic facilities and health services. Summer programs
at Tuskegee include:
MITE
Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) is a two-week program designed to
introduce high school students to various aspects of engineering. The program
includes laboratory demonstrations; design projects; lectures on college
admission; financial aid; cooperative education career opportunities and field
trips.
FASTREC
Freshman Accelerated Start-up and Training for Retention in Engineering
Curricula (FASTREC) is an eight -week program offered to high school graduates
who are interested in engineering careers and are eligible for admission into
Tuskegee University. Students pursue an intensive course of study in
mathematics, science, engineering, graphics and freshman orientation. Students
can earn up to seven credits towards a Bachelor of Science degree in
engineering. Industry sponsor award scholarships of up to $5,000 per year to
selected students depending on their academic performance in the program.
FPCIS
The Feeder Program in Computer Science is a two-to-four week enrichment program
for high school students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year. The
program includes computer-related laboratory demonstrations, website
development, design projects, an over view of the college environment, career
opportunities and field trips.
PREFICS
Pre-Freshman Program in Computer Science is an eight-week program that earns
college credit for high school graduates entering Tuskegee as computer science
majors. Tuskegee offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science with
general or information systems options. FPICS and PREFICS are housed in the
College of Business and Information Science.

SOUTHERN
UNIVERSITY
Southern University and Agricultural &
Mechanical College are offering students entering grades nine through twelve
opportunity to participate in the Engineering Summer Institute. ESI is an
intensive four-week program running Monday, June 13 through Friday, July 8,
2005. Classes offering enrichment in STEM applications are held on Mondays
through Thursdays. Field trips to industrial facilities such as Exxon Chemical,
General Motors, and Dow Chemical USA, including visits to companies such as
Delphi Packard Electric, Tobasco Factory, and IMAX & Aquarium are reserved
for Fridays. This activity provides
participants with a first hand look at commercial engineering
opportunities.
Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and must include in their application a current
transcript; recent standardized test scores; a letter of recommendation from a
current, or recent, math or science teacher; plus a 250-word essay entitled
"Why I Want To Participate in Engineering Summer Institute". The essay
should include information on the student's goals and academic interest that
might be helpful in evaluating the application. Submit application to:
